Glycerol & Propylene glycol

Glycerol

Moisture preservative agent allowed for unlimited use in all food stuffs cleared for additives. No existing recommendation concerning highest acceptable daily intake. Very high doses may cause a mildly laxative effect. Excessive doses cause headaches and nausea and may be of serious concern for people suffering from known heart conditions, kidney disease or diabetes.


Propylene glycol

Moisture preservative agent commonly used within the food-industry. International standardising institutions have certified used of Propylene glycol within flavouring and foodstuffs. Limits within the EU are deliberately set low and the limit for usage of Propylene glycol is currently set at 3 grams per kilogram. In comparison, the limit for usage of Propylene glycol in the USA is currently set at 5 gram per kilogram. Pro-longed skin contact may cause irritation and in rare cases allergic reactions.

Propylene glycol is considered to have a very low toxidity, both short term as well as long term.
